Health and Safety Committee

The health and safety committee is dedicated to promoting a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. The committee works collaboratively to identify potential risks, implement effective solutions, and ensure compliance with safety standards. Through regular meetings, training sessions, and open communication, the committee strived to foster a culture of safety and well-being, where everyone feels empowered to contribute to a secure work environment.

The committee is comprised of:

  • elected Health & Safety Representative—Dianne Conner
  • selected Return to work/Accommodation (WSIB) advocate: Emily Gibson
  • three (3) elected members: Jessica Beardsley, Scott Woods

This committee will:

  • Work to educate members on the importance of workplace health and safety.
  • Prepare and present reports to the regular membership meetings.
  • Encourage members to attend an April 28th Day of Mourning ceremony.
  • Participate on the Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committees (JWH&SC) at their workplace.
  • Ensure that the worker representatives on the JWH&SC meet separately from the employer to prepare for meetings with the employer.
  • Promote safe work procedures and environments so as to prevent illness and injury as a result of workplace factors.
  • Immediately bring to the attention of the employer any workplace hazard that has the potential to cause members’ illness or injury.
  • Work to eliminate all workplace hazards, be they physical, environmental, or social.
  • Keep an up-to-date file of all minutes and correspondence received.
  • Maintain and update the union’s health and safety library.
  • Committee members shall have Health and Safety certification (both levels) or be willing to take the next available course.
  • The Return to Work/Accommodation (WSIB) Advocate shall be a standing member of the committee (elected every three (3) years).
